I routinely travel to Thailand via Narita, and have never had customs check my bags anywhere. However, I've routinely had my bags searched by security in Bangkok before checking in. Seems they do it for everyone's checked bag on Northwest. Funny thing is, they don't check my carry on's until after I go to the gates. And they don't watch very close, so it wouldn't be that hard to slip something into checked luggage. I've even had the security seal break from the time they search until my luggage is checked, and no one ever says anything.
