Cinco de mayo has nothing to do with the liberation of Mexico from the France. It is a somewhat regional holiday that is most vigorously celebrated in Puebla to commemorate the 1862 Battle of Puebla. In that battle, Mexico defeated the French invasion. It was a shortlived victory though, because it turned out to be a battle won ina war lost. A year later, France was successful at beating Mexico and installing Maximillian. The U.S. might have provided assistance, as President Lincoln was sympathetic to the Mexican plight, but as you know from the date the U.S. was occupied with a little war of our own. You are correct in that Cinco de Mayo does have something to do with the French, but not their ousting.
