People,

We have GOT to remember that we are visiting Their country. And, like it or not, we've got to play by their rules. I don't Like it, but I DO accept it.

As an American, I am at a social Dis-advantage when dealing with 'law enforcement' in TJ. I accept this. I know that in their 'culture' it is perfectly acceptable to hassle me, and extort me for mordida. From an objective viewpoint, this is unethical, but from a Mexican viewpoint it is not, and I'm in Mexico.

The easiest way to deal with the situation is to Accept it, and do all we can to avoid giving the cops in TJ a reason to mess with us. That means not drinking on the street (something I still see happen every time I go down there. more on this in a moment) not spitting on the street, not being drunk on the street, and not acting like a jerk on the street.

Just this past weekend, I saw this guy coming down from the hotel and heading into CC. He had an open been in his and, and was caught behind some young looking punks who were being IDed by the door guy. I moved one of the punks, who had no ID, out of the way, and pushed the beer holding guy into the club. He turned to me like he was pissed and I told him to keep going unless he wanted to get busted by the cops. This idiot was getting ready to argue with me until he saw two TJ cops walk up to the group of punks and get caught up in the ID argument. With that, he turned and walked into the club with me following. As a thank you, he offered to buy me a beer, but I was on my way home so I declined, and told him just to be careful, because drinking on the street would cost him at least $40.

To me, this is just an obvious step of caution, but I see guys breaking this rule every trip. Why?? Would you walk the street at home with an open beer? I'll bet not, because in most parts of the US it's illegal to do so.

All I'm saying is don't give the cops a reason to bother with you. Will this guarantee no hassles? No, but it cuts down on the exposure, and that's really all any of us really can do.
