Hey Krico, I got a good one in the same vein...actually two but the second one has to to with spending 40 hours in the graybar hotel last year with a Mexican guy who knew all about Adelitas...but I won't go there : ). Anyways....a few months ago I go to the local Fantastic Sams to get my hair cut, I like this place cause there are a lot of middle aged Hispanic ladies who work there and I get to practice my Espanol with them....I told them I have a girlfriend in TJ to explain my interest. Well this time there's a new lady who had never cut my hair before, probably in her forties, blondish and is from Mexico. So she's cutting my hair and we're talking and I explain that I like to hangout in TJ and stuff....suddenly she get's close to my ear and says "Do not be insulted ok?" and I think..."Great, she's gonna tell me my head shape is too weird and she can't cut my hair or maybe I picked up some little amigos at the Hotel Coahuila and I'm infested with head lice or something"......so I gather up all my courage and say "ok". She lowers her voice a little and says "Do you go to Coahuila Street?" I have to laugh...."Oh no...busted!" I think to myself, "now all these women are gonna know what I really do in TJ!". But I keep my cool and say "uhh..duh whah?" or something very close to that. Well to make a long story short it turns out about 20 years ago she was a member of a traveling dance troupe based in Mexico City and one of their main stops was at the New York Club in TJ! The same type shows we see now have been going on for decades....TRADITION! She said she still knows some of the waiters and bartenders there, and had a few tales to tell about TJ 20 years ago. But the story doesn't end there, a couple of weeks ago I pop into the NYC to have a tequila with Esmeralda, the bartender, and I bring up this woman who cut my hair and yep....Esmeralda knew exactly who I was talking about! Southern Exposure! It's a very small world indeed.
