For mongers whose interest in Latin America is not limited to the chicas, there is a very good exhibit of right now of Contemporary Latin American artists at the La Jolla Contemporary Museum of Art called "UltraBaroque". I repeat it is very good. This exhibit follows up an exhibit of the private collection of 20th century Mexican art collected by the Film Maker Jacques Gellman who was responsible for the popularity of "Cantinflas". Also, I have not seen "Ojos Diversos" at the downtown contemporary yet but given the participating artists I am pretty confident it is good as well. The curators of both the La Jolla Contemporary and the Contemporary museum in downtown SD have very strong agendas for exhibiting both Latin American art and art that relates the fact that San Diego sits on one side of the busiest border crossing in the world. For obvious reasons, CECUT is a wealth of Mexican art/Art of the Americas although none of the shows going on right now are mind blowing IMO. You can even take the Chica object of your affections to the omni dome theatre in SECUT. Of course I cannot leave out the most significant and relevant artwork of all... The velvet painting that hangs above the dance floor at Manhattan. |
