I think the ornaments on the altar offer an insight into the popular practice of the Catholic religion, not necessarily into the mind of a prostitute. I suspect you'll find such altars throughout Mexico, perhaps throughout Latin America. Latinos have blended local customs and beliefs with Catholic theology in many countries. I think of the scene from Milagro Beanfield War when the old man is teaching the gringo about altars. He had all these "saints" on his altar, and explained that you need to make offerings of beer and tortillas and other foods to make them happy. And this was in New Mexico. Same with the 40s "Mexican firecracker" Lupe Velez, who lived a pretty fast life in Hollywood before killing herself (she was married to Johnny Weismuller and he used to turn up on the set of Tarzan movies with all sorts of scrapes and cuts on his back from lovemaking with Lupe). Before going to bed with a guy, she would light dozens of candles on this huge altar in the bedroom and pray before the altar. Then she'd jump into bed and screw the guy silly. Our lovely ladies in TJ are just following popular religious practices that reflect a larger cultural reality, I suspect.
