Being aware all around you is critical for staying safe in TJ, whether walking the streets or hanging in bars IMHO. Where are the exits, who is in the area around you, what are the numbers, types of individuals, etc... are all important considerations. Awareness does not mean you need to be fearful, just aware. I have MORE fun when I'm in this state of mind, because it frees me to relax and enjoy the environment I'm in, especially a zona bar and las chicas. Being aware is not just important with regards to the rateros, but the policia as well. Do you want to cross paths with them, slow down, speed up, avoid them, you get the picture. The "listening" skill also comes in handy with chicas. I always listen to the "vibe" between us and if it's not comfortable, I bail. Even if she's a babe and I really want to do her. Better to cut your losses. Celtics
