My experience of flying from TJ rather than LAX was mixed. Sometimes it can be better, sometimes worse. A year ago, during the Christmas/New Year season I made two separate trips to Aguascalienties Mexico from the San Francisco Bay area. My first trip was Southwest to San Diego, cab to the boarder crossing at Otay ($40), walk across the boarder, then a cab to the airport ($10). There I caught an AeroMexico flight direct to Aguascalienties. On the way back I found there was a direct taxi service from the TJ airport to the San Diego airport that saves a little time and money over using separate cabs. I assume that this service is available the other direction as well. My second trip was a flight on Southwest to LAX, then a Mexicana flight to Mexico City with a connection on to Aguascalienties. The trip basically took all day. Return was just the reverse. After trying both, my conclusion was that using the TJ airport was better for this particular route. Total trip time was less, cost was slightly less and I avoided the pain of going through Mexico City. Try to use a direct shuttle between airports as it saves you money and hassles. You still need to get out an clear customs when returning to the US at the Otay crossing but the shuttle will be waiting for you outside. If you are going to a city large enough to have a direct fright available from the US such as Mexico City or Guadalajara, then it makes more since to take that flight from LAX. It might also apply if getting to San Diego is costly from where you live. However, if San Diego is easy and cheap for you, then going from TJ can be better. It has many domestic flights a day, many of which are direct and don't require that transfer via Mexico City. As for booking tickets for Mexican domestic flights, my travel agent has no problems at all doing this. And my experience is that the tickets are as cheap or sometimes less than when purchased in TJ. |
