Flying from TJ to other Mexican cities

I just visited Mexico city with my unsuspecting gringa g/f (but no mongering there). I live in San Diego, but flew from LAX because it was easy to get non-stop flights from LA. It occurred to me that I have an option of flying from TJ (by driving across the border, I guess) to other Mexican cities for future trips. For one thing, TJ is much closer to my home than LAX. For another, it seems cheaper flights are available for some routes I looked at. Can anybody tell me pros and cons of this option? I would like to know if at least this is an *viable* option.
