Thanks to the inputs from you guys, I'd consider flying out of TJ for my future trips. If I do so, I would like to drive my car to the TJ airport so that I wouldn't need to carry luggages. Is this a good idea? If so, I have further questions.

(1) Where should/could I obtain a tourist card?
(2) I assume I'd need a Mexican car insurance for driving between the border and airport. Is there a place that I can buy an insurance at the airport for my return drive from the airport to border?
(3) Where do you park at the airport? Is public parking safe enough? Are there better/safer commercial parking lots?
