Costs in Mexico are a little out of whack right now due to the artificially high peso. As an example, rents in central mexico (i.e. GDL where I just came back from) are running $6000 pesos or more for 2-3 bedrooms (over 600 USD per month at current exchange rate) - the next devaluation should take the peso to about 15 - meaning rents back in line at the $300 - $400 USD range. (Still substantially higher than the $150 USD I was paying in the late 1980s)

As another example, a good meal in a mid-range restaurant is running 60 to 80 pesos, or $7 - $9 USD. A devaluation would bring prices back in line in the $4 to $6 USD range. Cervezas are 10 to 20 pesos, etc.

Nevertheless, a steady dollar income of $1000 to $1500 USD per month can support a very comfortable lifestyle anywhere in Mexico - now can anybody say the same about California?
