Strange, we were talking about this very topic in IRC the other night, with Mule Lip, who just returned from 3 weeks in Mexico.

Two things wrong with your assumptions:

First, the "working class" in the U.S. is actually fairly well off. Mexico has a very small middle class. Those factory workers are living in poverty, by most any standards you want to apply.

Secondly, in central Mexico it is, when it comes to buying "things", about the same (or slightly MORE) than what it costs here in the U.S.

Gas is running about $2.25 a gallon, a pack of Marlboros is $4.00, a six pack of Coke is $4.50, a loaf of bread is $1.90, a battery for your car is $55.00. I can't vouch for the exact quality of all these items - I know the gas is NOT super unleaded, and I suspect the battery is not a 7 year Sears Diehard....

But yes, the top earners in La Zona are certainly the highest earning "working" group in Mexico.
