There is a way to go that that does not have checkpoints. Look at 15 North, 78 East, then head over to Borrego, either by going through Julian or through Ranchita. Then out S-22 to the Salton Sea and north on 86, up to 10 then back east. I do not believe 86 has a checkpoint from S-22 north, nor does 10 east. You may want to verify the 86 and 10 sections as I don't travel that section much and generally south. If 86 has a checkpoint, then head out through Mecca, CA. until you hit 10, then head East.

This is a very long way around, but no checkpoints, a lightly traveled route and nice scenery. Borrego has a couple nice restaurants and this time of year the flowers are blooming.
