That's what the checkpoints are there for. There isn't any way around a checkpoint on any south-->north route along the border...at least in California and Arizona (unless you enlist in the Marines and go through Camp Pendleton). However, the I-5 checkpoint is frequently if not mostly closed during daytime hours on weekends. It is always opened during the wee hours.
