I did this about two years ago on the Taurus. There is a schedule of fees based on the bluebook value of the car. If things haven't changed in the last two years, I would guess that it would probably cost $650 to import a $2000 vehicle. I think there is a base cost of about $150 to the broker, plus various license($150?) and import fees($150?), and taxes(10%?). I suppose it makes sense then to bring in a more expensive vehicle, because the base fees won't be such a big percentage of the total cost of the vehicle. However, once you start trying to drive around a decent vehicle in TJ(something worth more than $3000) - it will be a target for thieves. Certain cars a MAJOR targets for thieves. If you're chick had a Toyota pickup in TJ, and parked it on the street - I would be willing to bet the thing would be ripped-off in less than 2 weeks.

Having a Ford Taurus helps, as every Tijuana car thief knows that all Taurus transmissions are "bad". I don't give a shit - at least it keeps the thieves at bay.

Our '84 Maxima looked like a complete piece of shit, but they STILL ripped it off - because they KNEW that it had a bulletproof engine and transmission. FUCKERS.

I also drive an '81 Ford F250 down there, and it seems to be impervious to theft as well. These bungholes all KNOW that '81 Ford Trucks are complete lemons, so they steer clear of 'em.
