I'm VERY surprised that this has not been brought up yet on the board, considering how many Rio post's there are. I noticed during my trip in February that there was a new outdoor bar/hangout spot on Copa beach. It is right next to the Holiday Boite, unfortunately I can not remember the name of the place. It is fairly large and there were alot of girls milling about. It has a large open air bar where you can sit inside or at tables. Looked to be rocking everynight that I was there, good alternative to Help, MP and Mabs.

I stopped by there a couple of weeks ago. It looks impressive as you're driving by but I wasn't pleased when I went for a closer look. It took all of two minutes before I shot right over to Help.

The place is called the Balcony. It has many different import beers but the food is not that great. The girls are the caliber of Mea Paticia, but you always see some stars passing through. It is a nice alternative as they play video concerts sometimes and of course soccer games on the TVīs.

I want to talk about a boite or bar in Rio de Janeiro that I never hear anyone talking about and that I think is a really great spot. I was at Balcony one morning at 7:30 having coffee. There had to be the ugliest, hard core pros in Rio there. I even watched a fight between two girls. All the 10 times checking out Balcony, never saw any good looking girls. Dog city!!! What a joke. Food there more expensive as well. Its been awhile since this thread has been updated, but lately I have been more times to the Balcony Bar then Terraco Atlantico (in front of help).

Throughout the week, this place is relatively full and stable. Including the "off days", like Monday - Wednesday's.

What I like about this place is that they play some background music, which for some reason is rare in Rio.

Quality varies greatly....yes there are lots of dogs, but if you are lucky a few gems as well. After 10, or 11 at night is best.

Prices are usually low. Very common to pay R$100 for an entire night. In a few instances, I have gotten freebies or almost freebies (pay taxi in the morning) if the girls live far enough away and it is late with everyone starting to filter out, or for some reason they just wanted to stay with me.

Drinks are little expensive, so watch what you buy for the girls. I made the mistake once and bought some blue drink the girl wanted, which was a freakin' incredibly R$18.00. However, a Chopp (Draft Beer) is R$4.00, which is in line with the local restaurant/bar prices (Devassa is R$3.90). The only thing that sucks that they replaced Brahma with 'Lokal'. I guess in attempt to save money.

It is certainly worth checking out - if you go enough time you will see some cuties. Not all the time, but they are there.

Since it is smaller bar, compared to Terraco Atlantic, is is easy to mingle and move around.

Just do not fall for any pressure (any girl that pressures you to go will mostly likely not be very good), buy drinks liberaly without asking for the prices first (If it is too expensive, I tell the girl she can have a beer instead).

Very strangely, the pizza is pretty good here.

And don't forget the guy that sells cakes around the corner. Freakin addicting!

I have been to the Balcony a half dozen times and have never seen anything even close to doable. I'm sure if you spent enough time there you would eventually find something but on a week, week and a half trip, I prefer not to waste my nights there.

I like the place, sure there may be only one or two doable girls there at any time, and obviously most could not make it at Help. Still you do find the odd gem there. I found one real beauty there one evening and we had a few days fling before she flew off the the US to join her fiance.

With the freakin' dollar continuing to fall, I will take the occassionally doable girl for a low price. Balcony Bar is perfect for that. But then again I live here, so I can spend more time looking. Terraco Atlantico in front of Help can be hit or miss as well....

Update on the Balcony Bar. It seems to have gotten much better. Many of the girls that used to work at Meia Pataca seem to have migrated to the Balcony bar, which also includes some of the TA crowd. Just my own opinion and recent observation.

Recently I also saw one of the hottest waitresses there. Interestingly enough I was told she is Colombian.

Within the last year the management of Balcony has changed and they have completely revamped the place. They had to if they wanted to keep Cats business!!

I suppose I should have stated most things don't really change, then added the Balcony caveat. This f**king correctness has got to stop!

I think there is different bands or guys playing different days. Sometimes it might be just one guy, the last time I was there there was a band with either 3 or 4 guys - not really in the habit of counting band members or qualifying a band as band. Just remember liking the music and vibe, which ultimately is all that counts for me.

The point being that Balcony has become a much better place to go and definitely a place to consider visting for the P4P scene in Copa.

Prices range from R$100-$200, with an average all nighter being around R$150, at least from my experience. There are, of course, always some that want more. But then again wanting is different then getting.

Copperfield, I remember why you remember Balcony so fondly. You were dragging yo so low one night you were catching concrete splinters in your butt. But you trudged off to Balcony anyway. An hour later you showed up for the party at Help with the hot blonde spinner-of-the-year! Your catch kinda lifted up my opinion of the place also.

Only CFK would pick a hooker up at a putaria and take her to another putaria - and pay to get her in. Now that's quality thinking there, I'm sure on his August trip he'll check-in a 50-pound bag of sand to take down to the beach with him.

They actually took the manager and two employees to the police station...What a difficult spot to be in...the TV's are up and down the street from the Balcony Bar and work alongside girls. The street side girls go in and out of the bar, working both the street and the Balcony Bar. I guess the TV's have the same right. But this is not a gay bar and having TV's in there would be bad. Rio's TV's are quite famous for stealing and pickpocketing. No matter how you fly, it is just best to stay far away...or lock down your pockets. But, I guess they have a point...kicking out a gay person from a bar certainly would not be cool anywhere.

In Brazil you can file a complaint against someone who insults you, which includes asking for monetary damages. This process is often used by employees against their employeers when they feel there is wrong doing. They, the TV's, will certainly win a few thousand R$, but that will just encourage other's to do the same.

Its a Lose/ Lose situation for the owner of the bar. Either way, it will cost him reais!

By the way, this is exactly how Help became a hooker haven!! They were turning away the prostitutes at the door and a gdp filed a lawsuit. When she won, Help transformed from a regular club to the prostitute club it is today.

Pretty much hang out here now once a week....usually after a night out somewhere else, since the Balcony Bar never closes. Last Friday, however, after a long and tiring work day decided to stop by a little earlier and just hang out - right around 11:00pm. I must say there were a very decent amount of good girls in there....I counted more then a dozen of girls that were dooable. The place was packed, but I still was able to get a spot to sit at one of the inside table. As much as I tried to resist - as I had early plans on Saturday - I ended up with an awesome beautiful little black girl...all 90lbs of her. Now, that is about R$4000 a month, quite a decent income for the average Brazilian and certainly more then enough to survive on. But, of course greed keeps them coming back. Since I do not understand Italian, couldn't really listen in, but she did tell me later that he had no idea that she was still working.. "My thing, no need for him to know..". Apparently she had just returned from Italy a couple of months ago to get "things" in order for her move to Italy.

The moral of story - and one told soooooo many times on this board - just don't fucking send money to working girls for crying out loud. Plus, because they are receiving cash anyway it drives the desperation lower, and therefore their prices higher.

Anyway, a quick report on yet another (and oft repeated) Balcony Bar, or should I say GDP, love story.

Balcony looks like a good time, but this place doesn't make an argument to La Cecelia in Havana. Help, maybe, but this place resembles an average outdoor cafe on the malecon...

Jonesie, it's not a club, it is just a restaurant on the street. People are trying to make it the Help replacement, which is just going to lead to it being shut down - or the management chasing off the hookers and mongers. The neighbors are throwing a fit, and just like TA/Help, it draws way to much attention to itself.

The "old" Balcony was acceptable since it was never full. Even on a weekend night, you could usually get a table there. The putas were generally ugly, but it was a good place to relax, have a few drinks, have some chow and maybe find a diamond in the rough. These days - it's a fiasco. Way too many mongers and hookers in too small a space.

So, they removed the few seats/tables along the front rail which were the most advantages for watching all the action and gave them to the 'band' - that sucks. All that room out under the tent and they give that location to the band! Way to go. Jonesie, this place falls somewhere between Meia Pataca and TA[not Help]. It's a diluted version of TA. Having said the aforementioned, their are diamonds in the rough to be found on occassion.

Beat up a tranny late last night close Balcony. Was walking close to Baloncy Bar towards Leme by Av Atlantica around 4 in the morning. The tranny saw me and walked towards me - I already knew what was going happen next, he approached me quite aggressively trying to convince me to go with him. Before I knew it tried the fast finger trick of relieving me of my wallet while distracting me. That moment instinctively grabbed him by the throat and threw him backwards onto the pavement, jumped on top of him and punched him 4 times into the face. Gave him a bloody nose & black eye. He starting screaming Police (and there were some around, but not close enough fortunately), so I got up and he ran away continuing to yell. Since I already had too much to drink, that made me snap and I chased after him around the parked cars (I know that was not a good thing to do, but it did stop him yelling further for the moment :-). He ran towards a taxi and got in....

So lucky the police didn't get me - certainly would have ended in a bad night at the delegacia with a tranny making a scandal the entire time.

But have to admit I did enjoy pummeling that fucking thief, plus that rush of adrenaline. Not exactly sure what result he would expect with someone of my size (I am 6'4" and 220 pounds) without having a knife or gun to threaten me.

Another story to add to my life experiences....

I had four of them try to rob me around that same area. I heard the sound of heels click clacking towards me and i knew instantly they were going to try and pick pocket me. Sure enough, one tried to jump in front of me and do some sort of baile funk dance to keep me from walking away. The other 3 started tring to rub there ands across my chest, stomach and groin, trying to distract me and see where my wallet and phone was at.

I kepted my hands jammed deep into my pockets. I faked left and side stepped to the right to get around the he/she who was blocking my path. I then yelled at them in portugese that i knew they were trying to rob me and to take their hands off of me. Once I started talking in portugese, they backed off of me and started looking for easier prey.

I never felt in danger but I knew these 4 were very good at pickpocketing. I personaly saw them rob 2 guys on two separate evenings, in front of the Mariott Hotel!

Arrived in the evening this last Sunday and apparently some guy died of a heart attack. Chairs were placed around him and a blanket/tablecloth on top of him. No ambulance ever arrived...about 2 hours later the coroner arrived in an old VW bus and picked up the poor guy.

Stopped in for a beer late Friday night before wanting to call it a night. I guess I always knew it was coming.... After Help closed, the Balcony Bar partial filled the void (Albeit to mixed reports - some liked it, others could not find any decent girls). But it does change the Freelance scene quite a bit in Zona Sul (Copa, Ipanema, etc).

If you are newbie and decide to try Barbarella and Cicciolina - be very careful, as both are very expensive. Especially Cicciolina can hit you with a R$40 beer in a second unless you asked first and then are willing to walk away (in which case the price drops and you will probably be offered a deal). I have not been in Barbarella in many years, but I also remember a very expensive establishment with a high door entry fee, high drink prices, and at the time they did not offer any beer (One of the second reasons I never returned, the first being the cost).

I always liked stopping by the Balcony Bar and will miss it, even if I did not always pick a girl. I will be back in Rio in about a month, but fortunately I still have a black book of numbers for girls I see on a frequent basis.

I will be curious to see what happens to the freelance scene and where it shifts.... The girls afterall have bills to pay and shoes to buy.

The termas still exist, but some are struggling to stay open (Like everyone's favorite LLumos which eventually closed).

Why anyone would want to do business in Brasil is beyond me. The corruption pervades every aspect of being in business, and is twice as bad if you're a foreigner and 10X worse if putas are involved, even if indirectly. Brasil's ability to keep rising as an economic force is limited by the inefficiencies caused by corruption.

Well, the Balcony Bar is now once again boarded up and closed. Let's see if they manage to reopen once again. The club on top of Balcony Bar wanted R$30 to enter and I passed......

For R$30, I got an excellent fuck in VM in October. No need to piss away money on an entrada fee at a third rate club.
