A. There were lots of people living in Brazil when a few Portuguese explorers sailed by along with English, Dutch, and Spanish explorers ... none of them actually "discovered" shit. Yes, the Portuguese did come back, enslave those people already living there and did colonize a portion of the place. Hence Portuguese is now the language. B. The entire rest of the South American continent speaks Spanish. Many Brazilians have a decent command of the Spanish language due to commerce and immigration ... it is much more useful than Russian. Spanish is the second most spoken language in the modern world. English ranks third due to it being the language of commerce and finance. Oddly enough, with all of our power and might the USA is one of the few countries in the world where the large majority of it's citizens can only speak a single language.
