I agree with most of what you say from your second paragraph on. But, I am not convinced whether the legality of prostitution in MX is fuzzy "for us" or we just don't know it. Several news quotes that KRICO posted make clear-cut statements about the laws: "prostitution is legal except for bars, clubs, brothels, and cabarets". Incidentally, these laws are similar to laws in France, so I might believe it. And while the news articles may be talking about Mexico City, similar laws may exist in TJ.

As for "time is money", you are right. When I was arrested at 3pm, I was on my way back to work. Spending a few hours with police would easily have cost me more than $40 at work. Of course, this was a huge factor. But I was downplaying it on purpose, because if I bring it up, it would have tilted the discussion on my favor too much. The bottom line is, I would have tried my way out quickly, even if I had been arrested off my work hour. I still acknowledge $40 as a fine for making a mistake of giving the police enough reason to stop me.

Finally, I have a beef with the guys like travelor who criticize us for paying bribes when we are caught in the defensive positions. They blame us because they think we encourage police for arresting people. And they say the police will arrest them next. That's bullshit. First, don't blame the victim of the crime for causing the crime. Second, don't pretend that you will suffer from our action. If you stand on your own principle, it shouldn't matter how we acted.
