Self defense techniques are a good thing to know. I can tell you, though, from personal experience that the muggers know what they are doing. They use the element of surprise and they work in gangs. The element of surprise has defeated entire armies in history. It takes a couple of seconds to figure out what is happening when they grab you from behind. Then within 3 seconds from that point you are unconscious. So, you see there is virtually no chance to do anything. It is very difficult to overpower four or five guys within 5 seconds. They can put you out almost as fast as turning a light out. Your only defense is avoidance. It is important everyone realize the threat of mugging is real and probably will continue to be on the rise as long as the cops don't care.
