In a former incarnation I owned a place that sold booze, cigarettes, dirty magazines, and other necessities of life. Down the street from us was a home that had a bunch of actual gypsies for about a year or so. The members of this huge family (?) would grow and shrink on a regular basis.

They were regular customers for soda pop, candy, and cigarettes. My clerks hated them and were positive that they were shoplifting but I never saw anything. They had the habit of descending on the store in large numbers and would swarm everywhere. So who knows. The biggest gripe I would have was their habit of taking a Coke, opening it, and then tossing a hundred dollar bill on the counter. We had a bank several doors down but they would never go there.

They spoke a very gutteral sounding language which I assume to be Romanian or Hungarian. The kids never went to school and there was ZERO social contact with any of the neighbors. I tried talking with some of them to find out a little of their life. No dice. There were a few that would show some friendliness but it was extremely guarded.

One day they just all disappeared.

Over time I have seen similar groups in the casinos in Reno. They are always obvious due to their group behavior, their physical features, and the sounds of their language.
