Meaning, with all this investigation, probing, disecting a persons mind, surveys, questionaires, statistics, hypothetical thesis, cryptic census, men are from mars, women are from venus theories, the only true way to really understand what you are researching is to actually become part of the 'study'. You will never understand what makes TJ tic, not in a million years and never with the funds being sent to you via electronically into your bank account and having a 'novio' escort you all over the place.

You must become one with the city, the people, the culture. Go to down town TJ alone during the day, rent a hotel, get rid of your credit cards, send the 'novio' home, throw away all artifacts of anything that has to do with research and start from scratch.
Now i'm not saying to become a prostitute, i'm just suggesting that you now are in their shoes for the first time. Go to a calimax or hospital or banco or a location in which you can earn some decent pesos to pay for your rent. Shop at the calimax for food, pay your bills with the money earn. Go out and mingle with the crowd in the revolution and the zone.

You say that it's dangerous? You say that many men want to ask you to their hotel or a room? You can tell them that you only do the 'dollar dance' routine.
Get on the dance floor with that Mexican or Gringo, and wisper in his ear how handsome he is and just start a conversation from there. You are now experiencing life as a TJ girl/lady and now you don't even need to ask questions, you will be meeting many men from different walks up life, from the poor to the rich, from the smelly to the Calvin CKB from the handsome to the coyote ugly ;-).

You must become one with the city, its people, its culture, its form of entertainment and also its way to make a living. You will hear stories that will amaze you once you get into the 'click' of their society.
All of the survey you have done previously can perhaps be tossed out the window since now you will be living and working in Tijuana and thus be subject to now be on your own and to learn what it takes to survive. There is a saying in the streets, that only the strong will survive, which has some truth.

I once met a lady outside Las Pulgas, around 5'3" who was on her own, we had a nice conversation, seemed rather different and extremely educated. I really enjoyed the conversation I had with her. She had black hair and a cute smile, nice shape, mid to late 30's. I kept telling her that she was not from TJ due to her language skills which she just smiled and said 'no, i'm not'. Had to leave due to friends waiting yet if that was you, sorry for not spending more time chatting with you. Good luck on your endevours and I hope your research gets you recognition and also allows for this type of 'recreation' to be seen in more of a positive view point as opposed to being looked down by society.
