When I moved to Tijuana, I expected that most of the women I would meet would be working towards moving into the U.S. (and had planned to look at their strategies, pregnancy, romance, sex, etc. being the ones that were on the top of my list).

Now that I live here, and talk to my female neighbors, I've found that EVERY single one I meet that is involved with a US born man is NOT interested in living in the U.S. (There are a lot of mixed-nationality relationships in my neighborhood) They consistently tell me that they want to live in Mexico for the rest of their lives for the following reasons:
#1 Their family lives here.
#2 Its easier, prettier, safer, etc. back "home" (none of them were born in Tijuana)

Many of them met their current lovers/boyfriends/husbands-to-be in other areas of Mexico, and moved to Tijuana so he could be closer to the U.S. Their guys are often commuters and have jobs in S.Cali. They complain about the pressure their guys put on them to move to the U.S., to learn english, to go back to school. One of my 40+ year old neighbors patronizingly pats his 23 year old girlfriend on the head and tells me she's not so smart and needs me to teach her english. To quell the situation I say in Spanish that I suck and could really use her help in learning Spanish instead.

Ethnocentrism: We assume that everyone wants to be like us. I assumed every girl's fondest dream was to marry a rich white gringo and move to the U.S. I haven't found one (yet).
