I've never been asked that question, and I've been through immigration numerous times. One guy looked at all my visa stamps from my two month journey and said "Looks like a great trip. Welcome back." And if they ever did ask, I'm a traveler and on vacation. Nothing else to say. I can guarantee though, that if you ever go straight to Japan from Thailand, the customs officers will go through your luggage. Never fails.
