I like the Bar Tropical and the chicas, but am turned off by these stories. My protection? I don't usually search for the youngest and freshest chicas. Instead I am generally looking for the attractive and unnoticed second tier in any bar (this somewhat correlates to age). I then interview for compatibility of desires, price etc..by buying drinks and conversing. Usually the story of how they came to TJ (and where from) comes out. I have heard many tales of sick parents and children in need of financial support. I have yet to hear of the false promises or a system of "slavery."

I do not doubt that the recruiters practice false advertising about TJ, Bar Tropical, or other bars when in the chica's hometown. Typically this would involve not mentioning the difficulty of sustaining yourself on fichas from dancing only. The chica finds herself turning to prostitution to pay her basic living expenses in TJ. On the other hand, Mexicans of every social and intellectual level do not believe that dancing alone goes on in these bars. They know TJ's reputation and have similar bars in every city. To me the chicas have always appeared free to leave the employment.
