I have been going to TJ for about 5 years now and I have been mugged twice. I am a small (skinny) guy and obviously a gringo and I walk every were I go (pretty good target). The first time was about 6 months after my first visit and the second was 2 years and 11 months later (directly across the street from were it happened the first time). Both times it was basically my own fault. I dropped my guard and was not paying attention to my surroundings. I didn’t get heart either time and only lost about $30 the first time and $1 the second but I was pissed at myself for getting so distracted.

I learned from the first time that complacency is your worst enemy in La Zona. Situational awareness is the key to safety in a place like this. You have to force yourself to be alert and ready to react if something is not right.
