No...that wasn't his dad...that was the judge (Bruce Dern) he went to see...to explain it all (out of court, the judge as "father confessor")...It was like they were trying to give it an ambiguous "Chinatown" kind of ending..."Jake!...Jake, whaddya expect? This IS Chinatown!" when everything goes strange and overlapping at the end.....In other words, weird things happen in Mexico..so just live with it, pal...You'll never understand Mexico, etc...
Very nebulous...like "The English Patient"...
The ending was more like a question ("What was that all about?") rather than a typical Hollywood type ending...the guy does not get the girl...they do not settle down happily in Crawford, TX with a rancho down the highway from "Dubya"....
I think the affect the director was trying to achieve is one where the audience leaves the theater feeling deeply confused but strangely enlightened...
Just like how I feel when I leave Adelita's...
