I have not been through the checkpoint since early March, but I never saw it manned during evening rush hour before that. You could always stop at the last exit before the check point, drop her at a restaurant or something, and go check it out. If it is closed at 5:00 PM, it is a pretty safe bet it will still be closed at 5:30 PM when you go back through with her.
