Club Idem has the ambience of a cocktail lounge. Most of the clientele are well-dressed middle-class professional Ticos who don't mind paying ¢600 for a beer. (Just don't run a tab or buy the overpriced drinks for the girls.) After you and the girl retire to one of the clean rooms in back, she collects the cash and takes it to the bar. Then she returns for an hour of rock 'em, sock 'em sex. Rooms are clean and reminiscent of small apartments, though bathrooms are in the hall. Some have full-length horizontal mirrors alongside the beds. The atmosphere is more upscale than in most places. Take a taxi at night. Recent Action: 6 of 7 were knock-outs. Hours: 3pm-Midnight, closed Sundays Best: 5pm-7pm

BAR IDEM

This bar is about 10 blocks from The Del Rey Hotel (Blue Marlin Bar). It is a safe walk during daylight but once it is dark take a taxi.....only $1-$2. The bar open around 3-4 o'clock and the chicas slowly show up and by around 6-7 o'clock. There may be anywhere from 6-20 chicas. Most chicas are from 18-26 years old........with mostly 5,6 and 7s....2-4 8 and 9s. I don't recall to seeing any chicas over 30 years old. These girls seem to be more semi-pros than alot of the chicas at the Del Rey.

There are several rooms upstairs with mirrors. For 12,000 colones (about $40) gets you a full hour upstairs with a girl of your choice. These girls are not aggressive and more than likely you will have to approach them at their table. There are some real sweethearts but they speak very little English. I have never felt rushed and several sessions went well over the hour. I usually give a tip of $20 but that is your option.

You can set up for these girls to come to your Hotel room after midnight or the next day. I always grab a handful of business cards from the desk at the Presidente and write my name and room number on the card which I can give the girls. Then I set up a time with them and they have always shown up for me. Usually, I set it up for lunchtime. First have a great round of sex......then order some room service.....they love room service.....rest a while and then have some more fun. For $100 you get 4-6 hours before they head to work at Bar Idem. Remember out of that $40 fee at the bar they only get maybe 1/2 or 2/3's....$20-$30. So $100 is a great deal for them and if you give them a small gift like a bottle of perfume it really sets the mood for the GFE.

The manager of Bar Idem is Roberto. The girls really like him as he is gentle and easy going. He speaks great English. If you want to take a girl from the bar to your Hotel room you will have to pay a bar find ....I think about $30. That is why I make my own arrangement for the next day with the girl myself. Roberto is a real good guy and the bar and the rooms are clean.

I am a fan of Club Idem as well. I agree with everything you said. A few additional points would be:

1. The action seems to end around midnight.

2. This is a Tico bar. If you are looking for a Blue Marlin Gringo crowd, this may not be your place.

3. You need to speak a little Spanish in here.

4. Some folks have suggested not walking home alone from here at night. A cab to the Presidente is 300 colognes or $1.

This is my Fave in CR, I went there my first time solo and was the only Gringo there at the time, Fridays and Saturdays seem to bring a real amature crowd and was when I really liked it best. I speak just enough spanish to look silly, and yet never had a problem here as the girls don't seem to mind. I never really negotiate the terms of a session in CR like one might do in TJ, I have found that it can turn off a Tica and have never been dissatisfied here. I visited CR in the off season and the rates were 10,000 C including the room (YMMV). Also I think this is the best place to find a girl to take to Arenal or the beach, I just mentioned I was going and many of the girls wanted to join me (just paying thier way not a daily rate) though I think they would have wanted some kind of tip. Roberto has many different prices. Depends on how you look and what kind of mood hes in. I've seen him tell guys it would be 20000 colones for an hour, even more if you get there buy cab(he has to pay the cab drivers commision) He is a very nice guy i must say.

Suggestion, tell roberto mike from california sent you and the price should be 11000 colones for an hour. I personaly would not pay $14 more for a down stairs room.

This is also the only place that i trust using my credit card. Last time i was there i paid for 6 hours all at one time, then i came back the next couple of days till i used all six.

Idem as you are aware has 2 prices. The downstairs rooms are nicer and a little more expensive. There rooms are walled with mirror like wall tiles. If I remember right the current downstairs rate is about 15,000 C for a full hour. Upstairs is about 3,000 C less.

My last 3 trips to San Jose have always featured IDEM. Roberto's a great guy, and runs a classy operation.
Since I speak little spanish, I usually greet Roberto & chat, then remind him of my preference for fairer skin chicas and let HIM select the girl for me; I've never been dissapointed with his selection or her performance! Possibly the girls are giving it a little something extra since the bossman picked them? They all seem flattered when I tell them they're Roberto's favorita...
It's a good place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Blue Marlin and relax with a cold beer. I've invited some friends there and had several enjoyable evenings.

This club is a must when visiting SJ.

IDEM for me is the number #2 spot in San Jose behind the Blue Marlin. I like to hit it at about 6 PM when all the girls are there but before it gets busy. Sessions here I think are now 14,000 Colones ($40) for one hour upstairs and a little more downstairs for the nicer rooms. I think the price for quality of chica you can find most nights is the best value in town. The Marlin will always have more variety and you can negotiate more time but you’ll spend more money there.

My first visit to IDEM was in ’98 or ’99 on the advice of a local. At that time, it was all locals and I never heard or spoke English. The quality was ok, but was hit or miss. Price was 11,000 Colones then.

I’d say that IDEM is still a Tico bar but the popularity on the boards and the proximity to the Del Rey has greatly increased the number of Gringos. This has raised the price (Gringo tax), but it doesn’t have much of an effect on us because of the devaluation of the Colon-I think in ’99 that 11,000 colones was about $36. What the increase of Gringos has done is brought more money and more women into the club. In my opinion this has increased the selection and quality of the girls. Highly recommended especially if you speak Spanish.

Hombrecito, I agree with you that IDEM is one of the top spots, particularly for newbies. The quality/availablity of girls varies, but usually they have some attractive girls, with a little personality as well, and although you'll find other nationalities working there, they usually have more than their fair share of genuine ticas - which is a definite plus to me.

As several posters have mentioned, the manager Roberto speaks good English, is a nice guy, and will be glad to give first-time visitors a tour and explain pricing, etc. IDEM is clean, safe, and you don't have to worry about getting hussled or ripped off. The girls aren't agressive, which I also like. They will seldom approach a customer, unless he's a regular. So, if you're interested in one of them, you have to initiate the contact. If you don't speak Spanish and aren't sure what to do, just ask Roberto.

My only objection to the place is that with all the white tile, glass, and mirrors, to me, it has a sterile, clinical feel to it. It isn't the sort of place I enjoy sitting around, girl-watching, and chatting with friends. I don't have sex with any of the girls anymore, but I do enjoy hanging out and making the rounds with friends when they come down to visit. Because I don't particularly like the atmosphere at IDEM, I seldom go there anymore. However, my situation is different than most of the readers here. I definitely recommend checking it out.

Tampagringo is right. I should have mentioned my recommendation was as a brothel, not as a place to hang out because it is a small, dimly lit bar that fronts the rooms in back and upstairs. Most people would not go there to hang out and I would recommend the Marlin or maybe the Park for that.

This is important because I’ve seen guys who go in after hearing good reviews then leave immediately because they get intimidated or think that this couldn’t be the place that everybody raved about. It’s not a dump, but most people have the idea that it is nicer than it is.

TG, I also just read your response about walking to IDEM at night on the chat board. The more I think about it, you’re probably right there too if you are a rookie, don’t know the area or don’t speak Spanish. I’m a native speaker and I’ve been to San Jose probably 15 times in the last 5 years. I’ve also been out at night with favoritas in Desamparados, Tibas, and other areas where I’ve feared for my safety and would never consider not taking a cab. I’m probably biased because I’ve been to much worse areas, but that doesn’t mean you couldn’t get robbed in front of IDEM and for sure no one would help you if you did.

After I read your post, I thought about some guy right off the plane in shorts with a fannypack and a guide book wandering around and getting lost down by IDEM at night and that could be a problem.

Tampa, great description of Idems. Its clean and ok, but it has that clinical feel. Perfect word. Like a hospital or a maybe a Mcdonalds. Walking around makes alot of noise and theres not really that feeling of life you get otherplaces. The Blue Marlin on the other hand is like a living thing. With the sounds of the casino, the crowd, loud talking, music, drinks going everywhere, its amazing. Even at 4am on a sunday it has an upbeat atmosphere that tops Idem.

Idem is a nice place to have a beer, check the selection out. Not a hangout place in the least.

I like the Idem. Haven't been in a couple of years but I liked the attitude of the girls. They didn't seem to be nearly as "pushy" as the girls in the Blue Marlin/Key Largo.

I discussed the decor issue with Roberto, suggested he make it a little more club-like with some couches and tables so you can chat with the girls before moving to the rooms in the rear.
He responded that he has run this place for many years and wants to offer "fast food" service: A nice, clean girl at a low price. But this business model requires fast turn-around, which the lounge atmosphere doesn't provide. He wants a guy to come in, make a selection and get laid in a hurry for under $40. Hard to argue with his reasoning. Think of it as CR's version of the Korean massage parlor.

My personal preference would be to select a hottie and take her out. That can be arranged by giving Roberto an exit fee, or by seeing the chica on her day off, which most will agree to if you treat her well. But for those who just want to get under the sheets and get down to business, Idem is the place, hands down.

There are some real Latina cuties in that place, 7-9s. Roberto carefully screens them for attitude. No brats, all sweet and accommodating. If a client complains about a girl's behavior, she gets one more chance and is then out the door.

Damn, and to think I left the place because the girl I was making eye contact with did not come over. Well, the good thing is that I'll be back, and won't make the same mistake again! Also thought I was reading a lot before heading down, but after only one trip I see I have a lot to learn. Perhaps I'm a newbie for life. And yes, I'm working on my Spanish, which comes in particularly handy here in Tejas.

BTW, I found the place a little dark, so could not see the senoras very well from the bar. How does a shallow person like myself who puts a premium on looks exit gracefully and make an approach with another young lady?

I usually don’t sit at the tables as you walk in because it is hard to see and motion the women over from there. I either sit at the small tables with the girls if it is slow or sit at the bar right next across from them and choose from there. A lot of times I’ve got an idea who I want before I go in and I’ll just walk up to them without sitting down if they are there and we go right up. Sometimes I’ll have drink before to make a final choice or wait for a girl to show up. You need to do more than make eye contact, just go talk to them.

I usually don’t spend enough time with any girl before choosing to have to make a graceful exit. I often try each of the more attractive ones once then repeat with the ones I really like. That’s what’s great about IDEM, it’s only $40 and if you don’t like a girl, don’t pick her again.

Roberto reminds me of Mark from the Eden Club in Thailand. They both run their clubs as in and out operations, they are not very frilly from the outside, but inside provide excellent service at excellent prices.

Still, I wish Idem's was a little bit more of a hangout bar. But considering Idem's relatively small size, Roberto probably knows best.

IDEM is a great place to simply checkout the talent in a very low key place. YMMV.... but when you find that sweetheart, you're sure to be glad you decided to swing by. I was there a year ago and neg 60 for 2x over at the Presidente. It was close to a GFE, but she was so attractive that I didn't mind the minimal besitas. BTW... there is also a good Thai restuarant nearby.

I was there last November, had a very rushed time with my favorite Jennifer. I think I was in and out in about 20 minutes, I was expecting a massage and possibly another round.

That's unfortunate, Jennifer is a young lady I've been meaning to visit, but have not yet had the chance. What happened? Is she hardening up or do you think you just caught her on an off day?

I think that it was because it was a Saturday night and the place was hopping. I usually get in there early, but I was with a crowd of Mongers from CRS. These guys could not get their shit together and I'd agreed to go with a couple. So I waited for a couple of hours.

There was a large crowd and I guess that Roberto either told the girls to cut each session short or Jennifer did so in the hopes of getting another customer.

Next time I check it out, I'll just do my usual practice, head down there about 5 when the girls are flowing in and choose some other girl. I may ask Roberto for advice but I will not go with Jennifer again. I'd bought her a gift as she was my favorite but no more.

Also the prices are sneaking up, for the longest time it was stable at ¢14,000. Then about 2 years ago, Roberto jacked it up and has been doing so more frequently. I hear it's now ¢18,000. If the prices keep on rising at this speed Roberto is going to price this place out of the market.

Max, can you now confirm what the Idem pricing was on your trip? I was there mid-2004 and it was 14000 I recall. Maybe it's more on weekends? I thought it was a great bargain and went with 2 great girls. Both nights I was there I was about the only dude in the place. I highly recommend it and hope to get back there again.

I believe 21K colones ($42) is rate upstairs, 24k for fancy rooms on main level as of this posting. It's a nice subdued place, clean. Reliable.

I knew Idem would be closing soon, but since I was right around the corner on Wednesday night at 8:15pm, I decided to stop in.

The hours are actually 10am-10pm Mon-Sat, I believe, but some of the night shift will leave before closing time. When I stopped in there were only 8 women available. Three of them were in my range, one stood out above the others. She was about a 7/10. Tamara was pretty, but slightly overweight. When I asked about the price, she told me 33k colones for the hour as the only option. That was more than I wanted to spend for her level of attractiveness, so I passed.

I've been to Idem plenty of times in the past and wanted to check out more new places this trip, so I don't know if I'll make it back this trip.
