To clear up the think/maybe/assume issue, I will ask one of my favoritas. Now she may not be an expert, but I bet most of them know what they are and aren't allowed to do. Point is, illegal or not, I do not for one second believe anything bad would happen to you. It's not like you were caught with drugs or a weapon, in which case you would be seriously fucked and do well to pay the bribe. I don't criticize anyone for paying bribes if that's what they want to do. It's stupid, but for a guy like you that obviously has a profile you need to protect, then you have to pay. I am waiting for the day, which I expect is coming, when they will try and shake me down. I plan to go for the ride. I expect the worst thing is they drive you around in their truck for a few hours and waste your night. Speaking spanish and being of generally agreeable temperment, I think they'd just let me go. But I'll be damned if I'm going to give them my hard earned money. I also don't go around down there throwing money around like a jackass like a lot of americans do. I don't tip cabbies (because it isn't the custom). I do tip the room cleaners (exactly $1 -- afterall they are picking up my cum-filled condom. I don't tip them if they knock early. Call me cheap or whatever, I need value for my money. It's clear that what you are looking for is definite answers. The only way you're going to get that is to visit a mexican lawyer's office and ask him. So go do it. Buy a half hour of the dude's time and ask away. Then come back and tell us so we'll know too. You could even take his card so the next time you're in a pickle, you already have a lawyer. |
